She emphasized that the Serbian side has so far been maximally efficient in preparing the design and technical documentation for PSHPP Bistrica and has demonstrated readiness to align it with the requirements of the Japanese side, particularly regarding the environmental impact of the project.
"Our goal is to begin preparatory works this year and to have the construction permit for the main works issued by early 2027. From the Japanese side, we expect to receive, as soon as possible, clearly defined scope and principles for financing the construction of the facility, as well as the timeline for the next steps aimed at securing project financing," said Djedović Handanović.
The Minister noted that PSHPP Bistrica is of strategic importance for Serbia, as the construction of this power plant will significantly contribute to the integration of electricity generation from solar and wind power plants that are either under construction or planned for construction. This makes the construction of Bistrica, as a "natural battery" for energy storage, particularly important for achieving the decarbonisation goals defined in strategic documents.
She recalled that the mission of the Japan International Cooperation Agency and its technical teams have so far visited Serbia six times for technical consultations.
“During these visits over the past nearly year and a half, they analysed the documentation, conducted site visits, and held discussions with local self-governments and communities. It is now important to obtain the Japanese side’s conclusions regarding the technical parameters of the completed design and planning documentation as soon as possible, in order to accelerate activities related to securing financing, and to receive a clear timeline," said Djedović Handanović.
